Roger gazes at Henry's performance CLARIFICATION: Roger is on the FIRST floor closing windows. Henry is on the THIRD floor closing windows and following the creaking sound.
Ergo, Roger cannot witness what Henry is doing (moving from the study to the attic) and is therefore unable to react to it.
Benjamin, oblivious to the unfolding drama upstairs, goes about collecting the books and papers recently uncovered in the attic so that he and the others can study them this evening. While you acknowledge you cannot witness Henry, there were no books or papers recovered from the attic. Items were recovered from (1)Beatrice's room (her letters and her diary), (2) the upstairs study (various papers, Allen's diary and a strange book), (3) the storage room (Aaron's post-war journal).

Sorry, meant the upstairs storage room and automatically thought 'attic'. He'd take the upstairs study items too though, I'd think.

While gathering the materials, Benjamin, being a rather intelligent sort, recalls Maurice's restrictions about taking (and Hans' current search for) items items from the house grounds. Any change of or alteration to plans?

HENRY Oh no! Clearly something potentially valuable may have been replaced improperly during the shuffling upstairs, and is falling down the stairs! I must save it before it breaks, lest we be cursed or fined! (Rushes to the stairs to stop the object in his mind from breaking.) Henry quickly turns to the attic stairs to catch whatever might be rolling downward, but there is nothing on the stairs. He points his electric torch upward, catching the open attic room. The rhythmic creaking sound is coming from inside the attic itself. Thinking maybe he should just head up and make sure nothing is out of place, Henry ascends the stairs. He reaches the top of the stairs; the creaking is louder here, coming from the eastern side of the attic, upwards near the rafters. It reminds Henry of a sailing ship rocking against the ocean, or maybe a rocking chair. He points his flashlight but sees nothing. Henry takes a step in from the stairs to get a better look, and a cloud forms in front of him, visible through the beam of the torch. It is his own breath. A shiver uncontrollably travels down Henry's spine as the temperature where he is now standing has decreased rapidly. Still, there is nothing here to be seen beyond the boxes and stored items of the Dubois family. The rhythmic creaking sound slows, then quickly fades to a stop. The time is 6 : 10 PM EDIT: Altered to note this is Henry's initial foray into the attic.

(I don't remember Henry ever being upstairs in the attic before...)HENRY (Wonders whether it's a chilly draft from an open window or a clue from beyond, and continues onward to the Eastern side of the attic.)

(I don't remember Henry ever being upstairs in the attic before...) You are correct; my bad.HENRY (Wonders whether it's a chilly draft from an open window or a clue from beyond, and continues onward to the Eastern side of the attic.) Henry notices there is no breeze. He moves back slightly down the stairs and feels immediately warmer. Heading back into the room, he is cold again. Extremely cold. He guesses it might be at least somewhere between thirty and twenty degrees Fahrenheit. Henry hasn't felt this cold since his last foray to Colorado. He wonders why the others never mentioned it. Wrapping his jacket tighter around him, Henry makes his way to the eastern side of the attic, through the junk and assorted boxes. His breath is still visible as he shines the electric torch around, looking for the source of the sound. Above him, where it emanated originally, are the wooden rafters holding the roof together. He reaches up and pulls down on one slightly, increasing the pressure with his weight; the rafter creaks audibly. It is not the exact same sound, but quite similar. There are no holes or anything else notable about the roof. Henry continues to the far east part of the attic, where he suddenly warms up considerably, then turns to look around; he spies nothing other than the various household junk and heirlooms stored up here, which the others had decided they'd try to run through tomorrow. Heading back towards the stairs, he again passes through the extremely cold spot.

HENRY I can't help but feel there's something that I'm overlooking, and a guiding force of some sort is trying to lead me to it, but without context or clues I have no idea what or where to look, unfortunately. What can I do?

The windows on the third floor are closed when Daniel arrives upstairs. He hears some creaking, maybe footsteps, above him, upstairs in the attic.

We do not normally get poor weather that shows up without warning in the middle of the day. It did not feel like bad weather this morning. Not until you arrived."

Daniel peers into the study "Henry, are you in here?" Noticing the creaking noise coming from up above Daniel walks towards the hidden staircase in the room and shines his light up.
"Henry are you up there?" Daniel places a foot on the stairs and hesitates, then thinking of his friends safety heads upstairs.

Smuggle 'em, then if we get discovered, act like we weren't smugglin' books and just explain what we're doin' with them and their importance to the investigation.

Daniel, standing at the bottom of the stairs, cautiously shines his torch upwards. The light reflects on the soft cloud of breath, emitting from Henry near the top of the stairs. The current creaking noise is apparently Henry's footsteps. There are no longer any errant creaks from the rafters. Henry is cold. Benjamin and Roger debate over how to smuggle the books out of the house. David, standing outside his truck and talking to Hans, who has completed his search, is getting antsy wondering what is taking the others so long. He contemplates going back into the house. Charles is having a tough time keeping himself awake in the cushioned passenger seat of the taxi.

Daniel ascends the staircase and reaches Henry. "What's wrong?" Daniel touches Henry's forehead "I don't recall it being this cold when we first came up here." It's not just cold, but quite cold. Not increasingly colder, though. It is possibly a stable temperature. Henry and Daniel walk down a few steps out of the cold spot, and the temperature around them turns to a warmer normal. "Why don't we just walk out with them, hand Hans a receipt and offer to let him check we've brought them all back in the morning?" "Hmm, that might work. Specify what you take from the post in that link. Well excuuuuuse me, Keeper!Roger and Ben move to the Living Room to collect the Diary of Beatrice Dubois, and the Post-War diary of Aaron Dubois. Completing that, they move to the Dining Room to collect the Journal of Bertrand Hamelin, and the Diary of Allen Dubois. "That's about the only ones I can think of to read up on. What about you?" Keeper edit: Edited for consistency with prior when sniped my rewrite.

"Here, hold these for a second"
Roger and Ben move to the first-floor library, and Roger grabs a pen and stationary, to begin writing a receipt for the four books.
"Once we get this finished, we can take them out and give this to Hans, and explain that we're borrowing them for the night."

We'll have to do this the old-fashioned way after all."
