"Good work, Daniel! You didn't mess anything up and you looked at that book pretty good."
Roger pats Daniel on the back for his hard work.

Daniel sets the book down and looks at the newly opened passage.
"Well that's something new."
Walking in and looking at the staircase closely Daniel sees it hasn't been used for sometime. "I suppose we should see where it leads."
Shining the light up into the room above Daniel steps on the staircase and walks up slowly.

Roger follows Daniel up the stairs.
"Careful, Daniel, something could come flying in at us from above. Or the stairs could give way. Or the haunter could trap us in here. Or the professor could recover faster than expect and come up here to tell us about books."

"Hold just a moment friends, let's be sure and tell the others what we've found before we proceed." David walks out into the hallway and shouts down the stairs. "Hello down there! We've found a secret passage in the northeast corner of the third floor study and are exploring it."
That task done, David goes up the hidden stairs after the other two.

"Good work, Daniel! You didn't mess anything up and you looked at that book pretty good." Roger pats Daniel on the back for his hard work. Daniel had, in fact, lightly paged through the two books found in the secret compartment in the desk. Both were written in English. One of them, the older of the two with all the signatures near the front, claimed to be a study of necromancy taken from a "Book of the Dead" that originated in either ancient Persia or Afghanistan. The text rambles for some time and would take a bit of study to look into. Daniel had closed it before he got too far into the text, and opened the diary of Allen Dubois. The diary is quite lengthy and detailed, and some of the random entries are of how he despised certain people in his everyday life. Before he could get into it though, David found the secret panel. "Hold just a moment friends, let's be sure and tell the others what we've found before we proceed." David walks out into the hallway and shouts down the stairs. "Hello down there! We've found a secret passage in the northeast corner of the third floor study and are exploring it." That task done, David goes up the hidden stairs after the other two. Charles, Benjamin, and Henry hear David smartly call down to them from upstairs, then Daniel, Roger and David ascend the dusty, creaky staircase, into the smaller, space of the attic no map. Much like the storage space below, but apparently less-recently accessed, this room is filled with boxes and trunks. "Not again" one of the trio whispers under his breath. The room itself is quite cramped, and the men can only stand up straight while in the center of the attic. Due to the tight conditions and general inaccessibility, it could take them several hours to pore through the belongings here.

Daniel sighs and shines the light around. Spotting a trunk Daniel opens it and peers inside.
"So are we hauling this stuff out, or should we just head back down?"

Daniel sighs and shines the light around. Spotting a trunk Daniel opens it and peers inside. "So are we hauling this stuff out, or should we just head back down?" There is a variety of clothing inside the random trunk Daniel opened. This could take quite a while. It might be a good idea to allocate man-hours. Additionally, it is quickly approaching a respectable supper time for most.

"Strange way to setup an attic just to put away old clothes."
Roger opens a box to take a quick look for other types of old storage.
"We should probably head back downstairs and look over the topics of interest with the rest soon, this is definitely going to take a while for us to go through these things."

"Strange way to setup an attic just to put away old clothes." Roger opens a box to take a quick look for other types of old storage. There are not just boxes of old clothes, but crates of various family memorabilia, historic junk from travels, and many other items of probable disinterest from the myriad of people who have apparently lived in this house over the many years it was built. In the trunk Roger opens are a set of small art canvases, sealed paints, and some brushes. The canvases are old, and some are used; watercolors. One is even framed. Apparently someone may have been an artist. Much like the myriad of stuff found in the storage room, I am not going to detail everything here; only any significant findings after a thorough search.

"Before we get started on this task, perhaps we ought to see about a bit of supper? Hopefully we can come up with something edible from the part of our rations that haven't been rotted or crushed." David starts towards the stairs down, hoping the other two men will follow his lead.

Daniel follows the two down. When they enter the study Daniel picks up the two books and continues following the others down. There is also a third book (the journal of Bertrand) and several dozen papers from the top desk. I'm going to stop actively tracking items for you guys from this post onward. That's what your clue consolidation thread is for.Daniel helps Roger with the papers, scanning each before setting it on the desk.He opens another drawer with a sigh and begins investigating the contents. Of note, I totally missed / glossed-over / did not allocate time spent for the first sentence in the above post that I just re-read, so it did not happen. It would probably take a good half hour just to give the papers their proper due, and with the light fading outside, and such a large desk to run through, it didn't feel like a good opportunity to read through the papers.HENRY (Places his paintings down on the sofa and heads upstairs to look.) 5 : 35 PMUp in the attic, the men realize they'll have to take out some serious time to dig through here, and instead they choose to head back downstairs. At the bottom of the attic stairs, Daniel stops. He shines his torch downwards; Henry is there, having arrived earlier after securing the paintings in the living room. Henry explains he didn't have time to head up into the attic, as he was distracted at the foot of the secret stairs here. He had noticed, and subsequently points out to the others, an odd bit of moulding between the wall and the bottom of the floor. Reaching down, he shows how the moulding is hinged at one end, and how it easily pulls outward to reveal a small, metal pull-ring embedded beneath it. The ring is just large enough for a single finger to slip through. Henry puts his finger through the pull-ring, lifting it slightly, showing to the trio of David, Daniel and Roger, that it works as the handle to a cleverly-hidden trap door at the bottom of the attic stairs, which they can all now clearly see, as it's been pointed out to them. The trap door probably leads to somewhere on the second floor along the north part of the house. The four reluctantly decide to not open it at this time (mostly b/c it contradicts earlier text and actions), opting to tell the others downstairs, as David recalls Charles having mentioned a secret room earlier. UPDATED THIRD FLOOR IMAGE FORTHCOMING, PROBABLY SOME TIME THIS EVENING; F.U. Imageshack!. . . The time is 5 : 40 PMEveryone is back downstairs in the living room, having shuffled past the smashed remains of the chandelier. The group has brought downstairs with them two large paintings (or rather, Henry brought these down and placed them on a sofa in the living room), three books ({1} "a slim, hand-written journal, by one B. Hamelin", {2} the secreted diary of Allen Closson Dubois, {3} the strange occult book found with Allen's diary) and several dozen papers and letters found in the top drawer of the desk. David beings poring through the foodstuffs, but anything that had been unwrapped or not tightly secured is now moldy or rotted. Even a chew on the hard tack meat seems stale. He ends up with several cans of beans, sardines and herring. Unless one feels like cracking open some cans and cooking up random foods on the stove, nothing that was brought here seems edible. WILDCAT - I did not ask earlier, but which of Aaron's journals is Benjamin reading, the pre-war book Henry already went through, or the later one from the storage room? I will assume the storage room book.Charles had settled into a light snooze on the couch, after he deemed the scenes of villagers on the paintings Henry brought down insignificant to his semi-cultured palate. Benjamin looks up at the others from reading Aaron's diary they found in the storage room. He suspects he has another hour ahead of him, but he does note a couple of interesting facts so far. Check PM.Edit: adjusted for various pacing, character locations, interactions, and clarification on the trap door.

Daniel sits down with the others in the living room and examines the ring in hand.
He puts the books down on the coffee table and re pockets the ring. "Any luck with chow?"
Picking up Allens diary he begins reading it as the others manage the food.

Daniel sits down with the others in the living room and examines the ring in hand. GAH!
It's a pull-ring. Attached to a floor. Used as the handle for a trap door. You can't just pick it up and take it.
I'll double-check my text to make sure that is clear.
edit: OK, the description has been edited to make that information clearer.

Picking up Allens diary he begins reading it as the others manage the food. Noting the sheer quantity of entries in the book, as well as the crabbed handwriting style, Daniel surmises this particular volume will take him quite some time to get through. His stomach rumbles.

Daniel puts the book down and rubs his eyes. "Charles, perhaps you could take a look at this diary when you get a chance?"
Standing up Daniel wanders over the the gear and rummages with David for food. Noticing some of the food has become rotten or moldy he finds it curious in such a short time of being here.

It becomes readily apparent to David that any food that was not hermetically sealed has gone the route of spoilage; be it moldy, stale, or otherwise rotten. This is not limited to just the food taken from the diner earlier. Canned food has not been currently tested, but consumers of sardines or herring at lunchtime had no problems. Unfortunately, man cannot subsist on canned food alone. At least, not Charles or Henry.

Actually, I was going to go through the diary that was previously found, but please assume that I switched to the new one when it was brought down. There is so much currently unread material that it doesn't make sense (yet) to go through already reviewed material with a different character/perspective.
Especially such a lengthy volume that took a few hours to get through. If nothing else, shorter items can be more easily reviewed by the less patient.
Meanwhile, food crisis.
