Meanwhile downstairs, Roger shuffles through the documents, his accounting and business acumen kicking in. He sees a solid two and a half hours of work ahead of him. "What do you think?" he asks Slater. Henry is concentrating deeply, the ideas of a pre-Civil War-era political thriller flow through his head.
HENRY "Hmm."
He absently thumbs the edge of the pages of Aaron's journal.
HENRY "Should be a bit, nothing juicy yet, but I'll certainly get this done well before Charles gets here at five."

Daniel surveys the third floor, noting the hallway that is unseen. Looking at the door directly in front of the stairs Daniel walks up to it and tries the handle.

As Daniel reaches for the handle, from down the hallway they cannot see due solely to the angle they are at, the trio hear a low squeal, as though a door on squeaky hinges was opening, and the sound of creaking wood, as if footsteps... The sounds get closer, maybe about seven steps, then stop. Silence except for everyone's heartbeats.

Hand on the door knob Daniel stopped when he heard the noise. Turning around slowly Daniel looks at the others then down the end of the landing to the hall.
Whispering "Whoever it is can't take all three of us, if we rush now we can catch him off guard."
The other two nodded to the plan.
Daniel held up his hand with the flashlight to signal when they should go for it, with his other hand he fumbled with the keys to act as if they were still attempting the first door.
He dropped his hand and the three ran for the hallway, Daniel in the lead.

Gun aimed at the ceiling, Ben took off after Daniel.
"'Get her!' That was your whole plan, huh, 'get her'. Very scientific."

David rushed down the hall behind the other two men.
Is David carrying his rifle around during this exploration? I'm guessing not.

David rushed down the hall behind the other two men. Is David carrying his rifle around during this exploration? I'm guessing not. No. Logic dictates the rifle is too bulky, you're indoors, and there's really no call for it. Almost no call for the shotgun either, but if they suspect intruders, then I'm fine with it. Also, Benjamin may have other, as yet unspoken, reasons for taking the shotgun.

Hearing the scuffle of running men upstairs, Roger raised an eyebrow and looked towards the ceiling. The chandelier was shaking ever so slightly. He glanced over at Henry, who was still deep in the journal, and frowned. Daniel and the others rushed down the hallway and turned the corner, to the sound of a door slamming shut. He thought he caught something with his flashlight, but it may have been a trick of the light. Benjamin took point beside him, raising the shotgun. The hallway was empty. eek-ert-eek-ert-eek-ert-eek-ert-eek-ert-eek-ert-eek-ert-eek-ertThe sound comes from ahead and to the left.

The creaking stops and everyone can hear the sound of a dumbwaiter door opening; the men upstairs from the dumbwaiter shaft, and Roger and Henry hear it from the nearby kitchen.

"Let's go ahead and check the door at the end of the hall before we become too concerned about the dumbwaiter," suggested David.

(Noon. The Dubois manor living room. Henry and Roger are filing through documents and books when they are rudely interrupted by the erking of the dumbwaiter door.)HENRY (Puts the book away behind the sofa and signals to Roger, voicelessly.) Go to the dining room. I'll flush them out from the hallway and we can surround them on both sides. Stand by the kitchen door. (Henry, cane and torch in hand, waits for Roger to be in position, then...)

There is no further sound from the kitchen as Roger and Henry wordlessly take their positions. Roger wonders if maybe he should have let a little more light in earlier.

Hearing the dumb waiter Daniel curses to himself "Damn. Has to be some young kids messing around."
"I'll check the room with Benjamin, keep an eye on the dumb waiter David." Daniel says as he walks to the end of the hall and readies himself at the door.
With a glance at Benjamin to make sure he's ready Daniel tries the door knob.

David follows Daniel to the end of the hall, turning back to keep his attention towards the dumbwaiter while positioning himself to support Daniel and Benjamin if necessary.

Daniel turns the knob of the stout oaken door, which swings inwards. It is yet another large bedroom, complete with massive wardrobes and a large, four-poster bed. The remains of rotting curtains hang from dust-laden rods. The bedroom opens up into a dressing / preparatory room that is tough to fully discern from this angle. The dumbwaiter has stopped moving, and there are little, if any, sounds from downstairs.

Daniel motions for Benjamin to position himself on the other side of the door.
"David, watch the doors at the end of the hall. If anyone leaves shout for us." Daniel gets ready and swings the door open the rest of the way. Walking in with shotgun at the ready Benjamin goes in first followed by Daniel with the light.

The KitchenRoger and Henry burst into the kitchen simultaneously, almost blinding each other with their torches. They light up the room, looking for anything, but there is no apparent movement. Henry closes the door behind him and takes a better look around. The dumbwaiter door is closed. Roger joins him in the room. Nothing. Nothing out of normal. The room is exactly how Henry left it earlier. The Third FloorDaniel and Benjamin stalk the third floor bedroom. This room hasn't been used in some time, in fact, Benjamin swears it hasn't been opened for even longer than the rest of the house. Their feet sink into the dust-covered rugs as they make their way through the bedroom and into the adjoining dressing room. It's apparent a woman lived here at some time, but nothing else has in quite a while.

"Well..."
Roger attempts to sneak towards the dumbwaiter door, ready to open it and catch somebody inside.
"I guess whatever you heard was just your imagination, Slater."
Roger throws open the dumbwaiter door.
"OR WAS IT?!"

Daniel gets back up and walks over to Benjamin. "I just don't see how the door shut."

Roger sighed, and waved his hand inside the dumbwaiter for a moment to ensure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him.
"Whoever this person is, they know this place better than we do. Hopefully the others have gotten the place mapped out well enough to lay some sort of trap."
Roger walks back to the kitchen door, then stopping. "Sorry if I cut you off there, did you have another plan?"

Daniel drops down and checks under the bed. "It looks like he may have got by us somehow, maybe down the dumbwaiter?" There is nothing to be found under the bed, but as he rises, Daniel thinks he spies something brown between the very old mattress and the support. A rectangular object. Roger sighed, and waved his hand inside the dumbwaiter for a moment to ensure his eyes weren't playing tricks on him. eekerteekerteekertRolling Dodge for Roger.
28% chance... rolled 28 exactly.
Next time anyone does anything, please specify the hand used, otherwise it will be chosen at random or by logic.
His boxer reflexes going into overdrive, Roger whips his hand out of the way just in time as the dumbwaiter rises up swiftly and unexpectedly. The bottom of the dumbwaiter tray elevator is now above the opening. The following is invalidated:"Whoever this person is, they know this place better than we do. Hopefully the others have gotten the place mapped out well enough to lay some sort of trap." Roger walks back to the kitchen door, then stopping. "Sorry if I cut you off there, did you have another plan?"
